The Image Zoom Plugin for Firefox
Image Zoom, an Image Zooming extension for Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird is installed by default in Firefox 3 (and therefore part of Ubuntu's Hardy Heron).
It provides a simple mechanism to enlarge images on-the-fly. From the FAQ: How does this
extension work? This extension simply modifies the CSS height and width properties of an
image within a HTML page and provides the interface to perform these modifications.

The image below, scanned and developed in Lightzone for Linux, has 3000 x 2179 pixel, but its size - i.e. the initial size when the page loads - has been reduced to 1/4. By simply right-clicking and calling up the menu for Image Zoom, you can enlarge it to 200% or 400% (= orginal size) or anything in between:
